Workshop on Quantitative Volcanic Ash Concentration Information Service
Please mark your calendar and join us for a workshop on the Quantitative Volcanic Ash Concentration Information Service on 30th October 2025, in Brussels.
Because of the novelty of the Quantitative Volcanic Ash Concentration Information Service, the SESAR Deployment Manager identified the need for an interactive workshop to familiarise anticipated users and developers of the systems of this significant change, and provide a clear view on the path towards implementation for all user groups. This will ultimately enable a smoother transition from the currently used European volcanic ash concentration charts.
Common Project 1 (CP1) regulation requires MET Service Providers, Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP), and the Network Manager (NM) to use the Quantitative Volcanic Ash Concentration Information (QVA) Service.
This implementation enables the processing and potential visualisation of safety critical information related to the latest information on volcanic activity within European airspace, and forecasts the anticipated movement and concentration of ash in the atmosphere.
The service features new thresholds and ranges, additional time intervals, as well as new probabilistic dataset. This will be used in conjunction with the deterministic dataset, all of which are provided as SWIM Services by VAAC London and VAAC Toulouse (and will also shortly be available globally by all VAACs). In addition there will be a third service providing polygons, for the different thresholds, in IWXXM-format.
There are several high-priority points to be discussed and stakeholders from all domains are welcome to participate.
The workshop will explore key topics including:
Overview
of the new datasets with specific emphasis on
showcasing deterministic and probabilistic data
and how this is different from the existing ash concentration charts ;
Presentation of the two new SWIM services
from VAAC London and VAAC Toulouse, including guidance, timelines, FAQs and a demonstration of the APIs;
Airspace Users / ANSP tooling demo
including EVITA, iNM, NM B2B
Stakeholder means of compliance
with this aspect of CP1 regulation;
Regulatory process
necessary for the operational use of the new service and datasets, identification of possible impacts and changes necessary to existing procedures such as the
state-level airspace closure strategy
, and the effects on the end user and on regulatory oversight;
Transition
from legacy products and procedures/rules to new QVA service.
The workshop will be held in person at SESAR Deployment Manager HQ, Brussels. All practical details will be provided in your confirmation email a few days before the workshop.
Feel free to share this invite with your colleagues involved in the Meteorological SWIM domain.
