News and views of SESAR Deployment Manager # 2
Dear reader,
The evolving geopolitical landscape is increasing the urgency to modernize European air traffic management (ATM). At the recent Civil-Military Aviation Summit, our Executive Director emphasized technology's role in enhancing cooperation and maximizing civil-military benefits. A digital, innovative, cyber secure, and well-operated aviation industry is vital to preserve Europe’s geopolitical resilience and autonomy, and to increase its defence capacity. Over 50 of the 356 SESAR deployment projects are either led by military authorities or impact civil-military operations. The combined investments from military stakeholders and EU funding have resulted in €11 billion in savings, encompassing time, fuel, and CO2 emissions.
Given the critical role of ATM systems and European airspace in the EU’s infrastructure, SESAR deployment activities have focused on the civil-military dimension of air transport over the past decade. EU funding has been crucial in developing technologies that benefit both sectors and in promoting the widespread adoption of Airspace Management and Advanced Flexible Use of Airspace. This dual approach will remain essential and will require a consistent and EU-harmonised support in terms of available grants to foster innovation and adequate coordination beyond national borders.
SESAR Deployment Manager strongly supports continuing ATM modernisation, both on civil and military side, beyond the current EU CP1 Regulation ending in 2027 and will actively engage in the development of a Common Project 2.
Wishing you a relaxing summer break and enjoy reading the latest updates on SESAR deployment.
