Description

The project aims to implement an Arrival Management System (AMAN) at Düsseldorf Airport. The basic Arrival Manager was implemented and put into operation on 11th December 2018 for the inbound flights to Düsseldorf Airport, improving the sequencing and metering of arriving aircraft in support of ATCOs.

The Arrival Management System provides an automated sequencing support for the Air Traffic Controllers to better handling the inbound traffic at an airport, continuously calculating the arrival sequences and times for flights, taking into account the locally defined landing rate, the required spacing for flights arriving to the runway, together with additional criteria and constraints.

This information is used to balance the flow of inbound aircraft and airport capacity by providing sequence of aircrafts approaching the runway and it also supports Air Traffic Controllers in the sequencing and merging process reducing their workload.

This Implementation project was the first step in which the technical base system as well as the key functionalities have been deployed and the Basic AMAN put into operation. In a second step, outside of the scope of this project, the necessary technical prerequisites to expand the AMAN system to include the Extended Horizon Function will be deployed.

The implementation of the Basic Arrival Manager system in Düsseldorf airport has:

  • Improved the sequencing and metering of arriving aircraft, with a reduction on the overloads;

  • Provided and automated sequencing support for the Air Traffic Controllers;

  • Provided support to the ATCOs in displaying the aircraft holding times;

  • Reduced the coordination effort between approach and centre sectors in terms of the flow of approaching aircrafts;

  • Increased the Air Traffic Controller productivity.

Concerning the benefits derived from the implementation of this project, it has to be noted that savings for 751.000 minutes delay of passengers time and 6.315 Tons of fuel with a total of 34 Million euros are expected up to 2030.
